Get the hardscaping right and everything else follows. It's the bones of a garden: the levels, the surfaces, the lines. The planting is what fleshes it out. We build decks, retaining walls, paving, gravel paths, edging and fencing, and we do it as part of the whole picture rather than as separate trades turning up in sequence.
Retaining walls do more than hold a bank. On sloping sites they buy back usable ground, turning an awkward face into a level terrace you can sit in and enjoy the garden from. Edging does the quieter work, timber or steel, defining the junction between lawn, garden beds and pathways so the shapes hold season after season.
